a dream once lost

I love the dark hours of my being,
My mind deepens into them.
There I can find, as in old letters,
the days of my life, already lived,
and held like a legend, and understood.

Then the knowing comes: I can open
to another life that's wide and timeless.

So I am sometimes like a tree
rustling over a gravesite
and making real the dream
of the one its living roots
embrace:

a dream once lost
among sorrows and songs.

by Rainer Maria Rilke

photos: multiple exposures, poem in german, handwritten
inspired by some art I saw in a coffee shop and by this poem, which is definitely one of my favorites from Rilke's "Book of Hours."

Being that I'm a die-hard Rilke fan I was surprised that I've never read this poem before.

I love it, as usual. In fact, it even reminds me of the concept I was trying to convey in my rather long and rambling post today about family stories.

On another note, how are you making your double exposures? The old fashioned film way or digitally? I love them!

I also do not think I have read this poem before. I am constantly amazed at how rich Rilke is. His depth just keeps going and going and going. I envy you being able to read his poems in the original German, and your images do justice to the feeling of the poem. I am also curious about your double exposures and how you are making them.
